I live and work on the edge of Constable Country on the Essex/Suffolk borders in Colchester with it’s magnificent castle. As well as the beautiful Stour Valley there are gloriously muddy creeks and estuaries and a changing coastline nearby. Meditatively walking and looking in these places provide the hook for a painting exploration in the studio. I am a landscape painter but of the inner weather as well as that which I am walking through.
Recently looking in wonder at Turner’s Norham Castle in the Tate I decided to follow his tour in Northumberland, visiting many of the castles he drew. These fortresses are not only magnificent in themselves but are deeply significant with their layers of history but also because in their time they provided protection, defence and security, resonating with me following a bereavement.
I am not making a representational image of a view but I’m trying to get back to that feeling behind the glimpse, that sharp intake of breath, that conversation or moment of solace- the emotional experience of passing through.
